Pow Wow

I used to pow wow as a child but not to the extent that I pow wow now with my daughter. When I was 8, I was gifted a jingle dress. In my heat I always wanted to dance. My mom would bring me to the pow wows in Kamloops. They had a huge one called “Kamloopa Pow Wow” at the arbour by the Residential School. The used to have a second pow wow by the huskey on the reserve. That one is not longer there.

One of my favorite memories is dancing intertribal with my auntie. She brough me into the circle and told me to keep my feet to the beat. The beat was like our heart. So, I did and I fell in love with dancing. I cant stop my legs from moving when I head a drum to this day. Now, I take my daughter across Canada and USA to pow wows. Sometimes we compete. Sometimes we spectate. Sometimes we just dance and pray for others. It feels so good to see the love of pow wow dance in my daughter.
